"From
life-and-death danger in the back streets of New

McKenzie is a dangerous occupation"

Woody manages to escape and is befriended by a group

"A
disaster in a college dormitory...a mystery in the
ashes...a suspenseful ending. This book grabs hold
in the first paragraph and never lets go"
On
January 22, 1959, Old Main Dormitory at Mississippi
State University, home to 1,100 students was ablaze.
After two days of intense flames, the ruins of the
dormitory revealed a tragic event far beyond the
loss of a structure.
Evidence
pointed to a possible arsonists. An autopsy of
a crushed skull revealed that death was not the
result of the fire, a fall or a failed escape. The
fire had been used as a cover-up for murder.
Anxious
to bring this tragedy to a rapid closure, officials
quickly concluded that Jasper Curtis, a troubled
employee of the university, and nephew of Dr. Allen,
Dean of Student Affairs, was the most likely
suspect. After all, both he and the deceased,
William Henry, were both romantically involved with
Mitzi Whitecastle, a local socialite. William had
won the competition presenting a motive.
Determined to know the true story of William’s
death, coupled with the fact that he was being
considered by the authorities to be a potential
suspect, Woody McKenzie teamed with William’s
parents to pursue the real cause of death. During
this time, Mitzi became attracted to Woody and he
became the target of a deranged gunman.
The investigation into William’s off campus life
leads to the up-scale social circles of the Deep
South. Beneath the surface of this seemingly
slow-paced innocent college life lies the true story
of Old Main Burning. |

THE TRIAL

"A
taut legal thriller that pits Woody McKenzie in a
cat-and-mouse game with a truly dangerous
adversary"
Lawrance Wilson knew this would be his last chance
to stay out of jail. His manipulative,
sometimes brutal treatment of the employees of Ole
Bruin Mills (OBM), a multi-mega corporation of the
Woody McKenzie family, had caught up with Lawrance,
and he was now in the full glare of the court
system.
Woody knew his testimony before the jury would be
central to removing Lawrance from OBM. Woody
also understood the importance of testimony from key
OBM personnel like Bobbie Sue, The Kid, Roberta, and
B.D. Woody and his legal counsel, Sara West,
spent hours coaching their witnesses and preparing
them for the onslaught they would receive from
opposing counsel Glen Davis.
Of
great concern were the intimidating witnesses for
Lawrance Wilson. All of the witnesses had
worked side by side at OBM and each had felt the
wrath of Lawrance, but in very different and ominous
ways. Realizing that physical threats might sway
some witnesses – but not Roberta, Lawrance and his
goons increased the threats and added a $500,000
bribe for her to leave the country. She and
her boyfriend Wayne decided to take the money and
run.
A
missing person’s bulletin was aired on television
and radio and within a couple of weeks; she
reconsidered and returned to testify. Her return was
kept secret from Lawrance and he was devastated when
she strode into the courtroom taking her seat on the
witness stand. Roberta told in graphic detail about
how Lawrance forced sexual favors, the money he had
stolen from OBM, the lies, and the cover-ups. This
trial, its verdict, and aftermath would be
remembered for a very long time. |

"A
fine first novel that introduces Joe Woods as a
writer with an authentic Southern voice, and
establishes Woody McKenzie as a heroic but complex
new character"
Woody McKenzie grew up with a dream of controlling
Ole Bruin Mills (OBM), the mega-corporation his
grandfather established at the end of the Civil
War. Although Woody’s father, Trey, was ostracized
from any association with the McKenzie fortune,
Woody saw an opportunity for great success.
After college, Woody began his career at the
Bakersfield Complex, attempting unsuccessfully to
keep his heritage secret. He wanted to be
recognized as a top producer for his demonstrated
efforts, not because of his family connection.
When knowledge of Woody’s family lineage spread
through the Bakersfield Complex, a battle with the
powerful-but-shady Lawrance Wilson
was inevitable. Woody set out to build an
alliance with those not loyal to Wilson.
Woody must call on the character and determination
of his upbringing in the Mississippi Delta if he is
to win. The story takes the readers through the
good and evil world of Woody and Lawrance, including
illicit sex, drugs, and murder.
This unfolding thriller shows how a few good,
dedicated, hardworking people can band together
against seemingly insurmountable odds to see justice
done. It is obvious at the end of this novel that a
sequel is in the making; The Trial. |
